IUI
INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION
What is IUI?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a widely used fertility treatment that involves the direct placement of sperm into a woman's uterus during ovulation, enhancing the chances of conception. This procedure can be performed using sperm from a spouse or a donor, providing flexibility for couples facing challenges in conceiving.
IUI is a less invasive and more cost-effective alternative to other fertility treatments, making it a popular choice among those seeking assistance with reproductive health. By concentrating healthy sperm and timing the insemination carefully, IUI aims to improve the likelihood of successful fertilization and pregnancy.

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
The IUI Process
The Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) process is a streamlined and less invasive fertility treatment aimed at increasing the likelihood of fertilization by directly introducing sperm into a woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation. Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the IUI process:
1. Initial Consultation and Evaluation
The IUI journey begins with a detailed consultation and evaluation with Dr. Chauhan. This includes taking a comprehensive medical history and conducting preliminary fertility tests such as blood work and ultrasounds. The aim is to ensure that IUI is the appropriate treatment for you and to formulate a personalized treatment plan.
2. Ovulation Monitoring and Stimulation
Depending on the patient's specific needs, ovulation may be monitored naturally or stimulated using fertility medications. If medications are used, they are typically administered during the early days of the menstrual cycle to encourage the development of one or more mature eggs. Throughout this period, ultrasounds and blood tests are used to track follicle growth and hormone levels, ensuring the timing for insemination is optimal.
3. Sperm Collection and Preparation
On the day of the insemination, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a donor. The sample undergoes a special washing and preparation process to concentrate the healthiest, most motile sperm, enhancing the chances of successful fertilization.
4. Insemination Procedure
The prepared sperm is then placed directly into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. This procedure is quick and usually painless, performed in a matter of minutes. Most patients describe the experience as similar to a routine pap smear, with minimal discomfort.
5. Luteal Phase Support
After the insemination, support may be provided to create an optimal environment for potential implantation. This often includes progesterone supplements to help prepare the uterine lining for pregnancy.
6. Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up
Approximately two weeks after the IUI procedure, a blood test is performed to determine if pregnancy has been achieved. If the test is positive, follow-up appointments and ultrasounds will be scheduled to monitor the early stages of pregnancy.
By combining precise timing with advanced laboratory techniques, the IUI process offers many couples a promising option for achieving pregnancy in a less invasive and more cost-effective manner than other fertility treatments.

Success Rates
The success rates of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) can vary based on several factors, including the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, and the quality of the sperm used.
On average, IUI success rates range from 10-20% per cycle for women under the age of 35. As women age, these rates tend to decline, with women aged 35-37 seeing success rates around 10-15% and those aged 38-40 experiencing rates of approximately 5-10% per cycle.
Factors such as ovarian reserve, sperm quality, and the presence of any underlying reproductive issues also play a significant role in determining the likelihood of success. While IUI may offer lower success rates compared to other fertility treatments like IVF, it remains a viable and less invasive option for many couples.
At Gulf Coast Andrology, we utilize comprehensive evaluations and cutting-edge techniques to maximize the chances of a successful IUI outcome.

FAQs
IUI is a fertility treatment that involves directly placing washed and concentrated sperm into a woman’s uterus to enhance the chances of fertilization during her ovulation period.
Ideal candidates for IUI include couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or women with ovulation issues. It is also suitable for single women or same-sex couples using donor sperm.
Success rates vary depending on age and underlying fertility issues. On average, the success rate is 10-20% per cycle for women under 35, decreasing as they age.
The IUI procedure is generally not painful. Most women experience mild discomfort similar to that of a pap smear. Any pain experienced is usually very minimal and short-lived.
The actual IUI procedure is quite brief, typically taking around 5-10 minutes. However, the preparation and monitoring leading up to the procedure span a few weeks.
IUI is considered a safe procedure. Risks are minimal but can include mild cramping, infection, or ovarian hyperstimulation if fertility medications are used.
It is commonly recommended to try 3-6 IUI cycles before considering more invasive treatments like IVF, especially if the cycles do not result in pregnancy.
Monitoring typically involves blood tests and ultrasounds to track follicle development and hormone levels, ensuring insemination occurs at the optimal time.
Post-procedure, patients can resume normal activities. About two weeks after IUI, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine if the procedure was successful. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled if pregnancy is confirmed.
